Events: Upper Wind Whitewater Festival 2022

Michael Hughes / Tuesday, March 22, 2022

The short winter days are gone, its starting to rain, and snow is melting. Spring is here! This past weekend folks from all corners of the paddling world gathered at the Upper Wind Whitewater Festival for a day of racing and paddling fun.

My friend Seth at Next West Media spent the afternoon watching racers at Rams Horn.

Races

A great group of racers showed up. Categories were kept simple with long boat, mens and women's short boat, R2 raft, and cataraft. To keep things even more simple all races were mass start. Check out some drone footage of the kayakers taking off from the starting line.

Since I didn't race I joined a group paddling down to Rams Horn to watch the races. The racer all came through and made the massive hole look easy. Lucky for the racers, there was only a little bit of carnage.

Thanks

The day ended with awards and a raffle at Backwoods Brewing in Carson. The event wouldn't be possible without the help and support of the rafting and kayaking community. Also a big thank you to the local businesses that sponsored the day.

Michael Hughes

Michael grew up in the small Minnesota town of Stewartville. He spent his days outside in the woods and riding a bike. The only thing that has changed is his location. Oregon is now home and he is still outside, riding a bike, and paddling where ever the water is.
