Pro Tips: Last Minute Holiday Gift Ideas

Michael Hughes / Thursday, December 19, 2024

The holidays are here, you need an extra gift or two for someone, and you only have a few days left. Here is a list of some awesome gear any outdoor aficionado will love that many outdoor shops will have in stock.

Therm-A-Rest Compressible Pillow

I have been using an older version of the large compressible pillow on raft, kayak, and backpacking trips for years. It packs down small, doesn't weight much, and is really comfortable. Recently I got the small version to try as an alternative to the U shaped neck pillows for travel. Worked great for a 12 hour flight and packs down nice and small. Many may find it too small for a nights sleep but its better than a stuff sack of dirty clothes.

So many cute patterns to choose from!

Flip Line And Carabiner

A flip line can help you flip your raft after almost making the line or it can be used to make an anchor, hang wet gear, or tie up your raft. It's a helpful tool that takes up a little amount of room. Pair it with a carabiner and you're ready for almost anything.

Hydro Flask Bottle

It's hard to beat ice cold water on a hot river day. Same goes for a hot beverage on an icy cold river day. Give the gift of a nice insulated bottle. It might sound a bit much but the 64oz bottle has been a life saver on both hot and cold days. Hydro Flask also makes some smaller options for all your beverage needs.

Ice water on a hot day is SO refreshing

Cam Straps

The classic iconic blue NRS strap is the gift that no one will ever be bummed out about getting. Also no one person can ever have too many straps. Whether you are tying down a bag stack or simply keeping your pants from falling down there is always a use for a cam strap.

Make sure to write your name on them.

Sun Shirt

Many people are ditching the "healthy looking summer tan" look and option for lightweight sun protective clothing. There are many options for sun protection from, sun hoodies, no hoods, button ups, and half zips all from a wide array of materials and brands. Either way, some sort of light weight sun shirt will be greatly appreciated.

Don't be like Peter, wear a sun shirt!

Head Lamp

There are so many $20-50 head lamp options out there that are great options for all activities. Personally I like ones that are rechargeable so I don't have to carry extra batteries, just don't forget to charge it.

Goodr Sunglasses

Sunglasses are essential for long days outside. I think most people even have multiple pairs they keep on them. Goodr has a handful of different styles a big selection of colors. Great as your everyday or backup pair. Bonus points if you include a pair of fresh Chums on them

Michael grew up in the small Minnesota town of Stewartville. He spent his days outside in the woods and riding a bike. The only thing that has changed is his location. Oregon is now home and he is still outside, riding a bike, and paddling where ever the water is.
